March, 30th.

Brouage was founded in 1555 by Jacques de Pons on the Bay of Biscay facing the Atlantic Ocean. Its economy was based on salt and access to the sea. The town was fortified between 1630 and 1640 by Cardinal Richelieu as a Catholic bastion in order to fight against the neighbouring Protestant town of La Rochelle. Gradually the harbour silted up in the last part of the 17th century, leaving the town stranded and useless as a port. It fell into ruin.

The town’s most celebrated son is the French navigator Samuel de Champlain, who lived there when young, before being the co-founder of French settlement in Acadia (1604–1607) and Quebec (1608–1635).

In 1825 Brouage was joined to the village of Hiers, 2.5 km (1.6 mi) away, forming the commune of Hiers-Brouage.

Deer-est, March 30th

Deer-est, March 30th

A cat may look at a king.

A cat may look at a king.

Spring

Spring

Ciconia

Ciconia

Actitis Hypoleucos

Actitis Hypoleucos

Les collecteurs, Arvert

These beautiful collections are priceless, and currently IN GREAT DANGER.

Formalin is a product that needs to be replaced after a while because it evaporate, leaving the objects it preserves dried and starting to petrify. 70% of these collections are starting to disintegrate, and the museum can’t afford to replace the missing formalin with its legal substitute liquid, much more expensive.

If nobody does something, we will loose most of these objects.

This Mummy was brought back from Alexandria in Egypt during the XIXth century, and as been stored ever since in the museum. As the years went, this poor fellow was roughly treated by the “carabins”, the student from the medicine school, that loved to dance with it or to put him in a chair and go down two flights of stairs.

The school has been closed for a while now, and is now a museum, that holds an impressive library, but also an Anatomy cabinet, with a large collection of skulls for the phrenology studies, foetuses in formalin, and real skinned anatomical figures.

One of my friend is actually working on this mummy, and on how to present these very sensitive collections to the public, in order to avoid the “Freak Show” and to raise awareness to the importance of these collections in the progress of Medicine and Sciences. I got to actually visit the storerooms were this mummy is actually stored, away from the eye of the public.

These beautiful collections are priceless, and currently IN GREAT DANGER.
